Oskar Lapp Research Prize 2015 awarded

Bangalore, May 2015 : The Oskar Lapp Research Prize 2015 has been awarded to Dr Jordi Heijman and associate professor Dr Niels Voigt, both of whom work at the Institute for Pharmacology in Essen University Hospital, Germany. At the institute, they have conducted collaborative research work on the topic of "cellular and molecular mechanisms of arrhythmogenesis in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation" and have devised new approaches to treating this cardiac irregularity. The Oskar Lapp Research Prize, awarded by the Oskar Lapp Foundation, includes prize money of €12,000 and was presented to the two researchers at the 81st annual conference of the German Cardiac Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie – Herz und Kreislaufforschung e.V.) in Mannheim. The Oskar Lapp Foundation was founded in 1992 in honour of the Stuttgart-based businessman Oskar Lapp, who died on 25 April 1987 as a result of a heart attack. The foundation aims to offer researchers further incentives to concern themselves with the field of cardiovascular research. This is because diseases related to the cardiovascular system still rank among the most common diseases today, and are the number one cause of death in Germany. Ursula Ida Lapp, chair of the foundation's board of trustees, said: "My husband passed away far too early. Therefore there is a need for better research into prophylaxis, diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation for coronary heart disease. There is still a lot to be done." In addition to the Oskar Lapp Research Prize, the Oskar Lapp Foundation also awards a grant every two years that provides up to €20,000 for equipment. The grant is a means of financial support for medical scientists involved in experimental or clinical work, as well as natural scientists who conduct experimental and clinical-based research. Along with the founding family, the members of the Oskar Lapp Foundation Board of Trustees are Prof. Gunther Arnold (former Director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie – Herz und Kreislaufforschung e.V.), Prof. Anton Both (retired M e d i c a l D i r e c t o r, K l i n i k u m S t u t t g a r t , Katharinenhospital), Dr Rolf Thieringer (first mayor of the state capital of Stuttgart), Prof. Roderich C. Thümmel (lawyer), Prof. Thomas Nordt (Medical Director, Klinikum Stuttgart, Katharinenhospital) and Konstantinos Papoutsis (Director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie – Herz und Kreislaufforschung e.V.).
