Miyakawa to Tighten Grip on India

Miyakawa to Tighten Grip on India

Miyakawa Industry Co Ltd, famous for the ‘Miyakawa’ brand of drilling, multidrilling and multi-tapping heads as well as attachments and machines and tools for chamfering and bevelling applications, is now reasserting its presence in the Indian market after a decade or more of losing market to rivals from Taiwan and Korea, mainly due to price benefits. It was a problem
the Japanese company with its more than 50 years of experience and reputation had never foreseen.
The company is now dealing with this problem by establishing a collaborative venture in India to make available its products at competitive prices.
Announcing this on August 8, Jiro Miyakawa, the CEO of the company, said, “We have decided to start our operations from Pune because it is an automobile hub and the OEMs in this sector will be our first clients for our wide range of products. But more than just the drilling attachments and chamfering tools, we are also looking at bringing here our CNC bridge drilling machines, various types of drilling machines for sheet metals, fully automated drilling-tapping machines and auto feed equipments.” With its large machine manufacturing facility in Seki City in the province of Gifu, Miyakawa’s popular multiple spindle heads have been patented in many countries outside Japan, including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Taiwan, China and South
Korea, among others. The overall strategy for India is to first focus on its chamfering tools and auto feed chamfering units, primarily in the automotive and ship-building sectors. “Chamfering
is today a very important aspect of manufacturing where sheet metal and huge plates are involved. That is because there is in place an international regulation that disallows pointed edges to prevent accidents. Also, pointed edges are dangerous, especially in the building of aircrafts and ships, because they attract electrical charge from lightning and thunderstorms. Therefore, chamfering becomes a prerequisite to be able to create the right kind of curvature in all such metal products,” informs Nandkishore Kulkarni, CEO & Director, Miyakawa Kogyo India Private Limited. But this is just the first part of its India story. The next big plan is to set up a manufacturing base within a year’s time.
“To be able to make this entire operation sustainable and successful, we have to get into the production of some of our products such as sheet metal chamfering tools and auto feed chamfering units depending on what the initial response is. We have not yet decided on where the manufacturing base will be but Maharashtra, and especially Pune, is high in the reckoning. The investments and production capacity numbers will be disclosed only after we have gained an exact estimation of the market requirement. Rest assured, the products made in India will have a 50 per cent price benefit as compared to our competitors in Taiwan or Korea,” says Miyakawa. In fact, it is quite possible that its Indian manufacturing centre will export products
to the other Asian markets.
